I'm sitting at home, flicking the remote on, the channel welded to WWE RAW. Why not it's Monday, time to suspend disbelief and get entertained. But what's this? Vinny Mac is in the ring speaking? Let's listen in shall we?
"Ladies and gentlemen, people of RAW, and fans of the WWE in general. The WWE has come to the decision to terminate the contract of THE GREAT KHALI. Not for his wrestling ability, or even his lack thereof, but in order to make the WWE a more entertaining and believable federation. After all, Khali outweights his opponents like John Cena by 148 lbs, or like in the case of a larger man like JBL, by a whole 118 lbs. But rather than get rid of all the smaller wrestlers, I decided to just rid of Khali. I came to this decision... after reading online a discussion about whether or not women could compete with men in the ring. Now, althou we here at the WWE do not do such setups, it did get me thinking. After all, some of the arguements for not having women compete, is that the men were too large and far stronger than the women and such mixups would not be very 'realistic". So, using this reasoning, since we do not have such male/female matches, we have decided to use this logic to level the playing field. After all, wrestling is supposed to be believable isn't it?
No one is going to believe a wrestler that is outweighed by close to 150 lbs has any sort of chance against Khali. The size difference is too much to overcome. What's this? Speed? Did someone mention speed? Yeah right! We all know wrestling is all about strength. What? What's this? Did someone mention technical manuevers, leverage, jumping and thrust moves? Mmmmmmm, I don't think so. wrestling is all about body slams and lifting your opponent. No one is going to buy John Cena, our Heavyweight champion, has the ability to powerbomb Khali, so why even bother with other in-ring tactics. Without the ability to over come by sheer force, anyone smaller than Khali is just not a believable opponent. But rather than fire all the smaller people, we'll just be getting rid of Khali. Of course, this also means that the Big Show, Visera, and Mark Henry will also be let go as well as Rey Mysterio. After all, he's what? a good 40-45 lbs less than the rest of the roster. Not very believable. Oh, why not. It has just occurred to me, that since Jeff Hardy can't seem to hang with Randy Orton when it comes to bloody, gruesome, violent stuff without having to utilize high flying technicals in response, we have also but that he will be let go. I don't care that the fans loved when he flew off the tower onto Randy Orton and have been talking about it ever since. I don't care that the writers of that match took the time to use the moveset of each wrestler to create a memorable match, he's gone! Also, althou the 90 year old Ric Flair will continue to grace the rings, Chris Jericho will no longer be matched with larger men like JBL, Batista, or even Edge all in the name of realism. He will now fight Funaki, Jamie Noble and Brain London. And I must say, I thank the stars, that I stumbled across that forum's topic about women in e-wrestling. It has changed my thinking 1,000 %. I now hand the microphone over to my e-wrestling counterpart... the head of the online fantasy Federation "REALLY EXTREMELY BLOODY FEDERATION, Mister Sarcasim.
Thank you Vinny. Wrestling has always been about being able to be believable, and this is another step in that direction. I hope that e-wrestling follows your lead, and rids itself of female vs. male matches. We need more convicted murderers, more half-demons, more millionaire political hitmen, more street-rapping gang leaders-who-approach-white-promoters-who-wrestle-in-school-gyms-turned-wrestlers, and most of all, e-wrestling needs more dark, untertaking characters who spout "rest in peace, " in order to be seen as real.
Women characters winning matches, regardless of talent has no basis in realism. And even thou, we have plenty of creative fiction writers, and we have the power to create the illusion and drama necessary to make it a possibility, we feel it's too much work. We feel that the burden of making women fighting men believable, lies in the women themselves. Even thou we employ our writers to make other matches believable, we feel that attempting to remember women's movesets enough to have a believable match is too much work. We'll do it for everyone else, be them 8'0 450 lbs ninjas or people that resemble that guy from PRISON BREAK. They can leap off the top rope and powerslam whoever they please regardless of their own size limitations but unless the women can prove 100%, with a male's moveset and a muscular avatar that they can powerbomb, body slam and piledrive every member of the roster, then, we have no desire to work with them enough to make their in-ring experience a believable one. I am glad the WWE has taken this step, towards realism, much like the fantasy game has.
THANK YOU"
I again click the remote and toss it on the plush couch next to me, drinking in the words and images, of a RAW gone mad. They both talked of realism. But the only thing phrase that keeps popping up in my mind is...
GET REAL....
